On our 12th episode, host Professor Cesare Augusto welcomes a very special guest lecturer, filmmaker and cinephile extraordinaire Mel Cartegena as they discuss DARK OF THE SUN, the visually-stunning and ferociously-violent 1968 mercenary thriller directed by Jack Cardiff and starring cult screen legends Rod Taylor, Jim Brown, Yvette Mimeux, Peter Carsten, and Calvin Lockhart!
Taylor portrays Captain Bruce Curry, a steely veteran mercenary who is hired by Congolese President Ubi (Lockhart) to lead a 40-man strong army deep in the Congo jungle by train to rescue a colony of people from the clutches of an invading tribe known as the Simbas. This mission is only the tip of the iceberg, however, as Curry discovers an ulterior motive: they must also recover a fortune of mined diamonds worth millions! Backed by his faithful friend and second-in-command Ruffo (the ever powerful Brown), Curry leads their army against insane odds, from gun-totting fighter jets, the homicidal Simbas, and even a psychotic member of his own team!
