If it's a commercial building, you can take 39 years of depreciation. If it's a residential structure, you're able to depreciate for 27 and a half years. But does your carpet last for 27 and a half years? No, it depreciates faster. You can depreciate different elements of the structure at different rates (5 years, 7 years, 15 years), but you have to have a study to make sure you're doing it right.
