What is love? No, I'm not talking about the song by Haddaway or TWICE. In recognition of Valentine's Day this next week and the many conversations I have with clients about this topic, let's talk about love and what it is.
Here's a brief rundown. There are seven different kinds of love according to the Greek language, but we're looking at three of them because that was all I found when I was looking up this information while recording:
- Eros - Romantic love
- Philia - Love among friends
- Agape - Unconditional love
There are also 8 types of love according to Robert Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love that are based on the three vertices of passion, intimacy, and commitment:
- Non-love - None of the three are represented
- Infatuation - Only passion is present
- Liking - Only Intimacy is present
- Empty Love - Only commitment is present
- Romantic Love - Passion and intimacy
- Fatuous Love - Passion and commitment
- Companionate Love - Intimacy and commitment
- Consummate Love - Passion, intimacy, and commitment
