Paul's distrust of human centered ethics stems from his understanding of the human condition. With Adam humanity fell -- human fallenness meaning that people cannot always know and do what is right (Rom.3:10-11). They became slaves to sin (Rom.6:17-20). Their minds are blinded by the God of this eon (2 Cor.4:4). Thankfully, Paul lays out a Biblical ethic for the Body of Christ. It is a Christ centered ethic.
