Welcome to Ingredient Intel. I'm your ingredient investigator,
and I spend hours combing through articles, publications, and studies to bring
you intel on ingredients and products that can harm your health.
But it's not all bad news.
I also share ingredients you can use that is actually good for your health.
And I'm excited to share with you what I've discovered.
I need to tell you I have spent 30 plus years helping people,
(00:48):
both as an educator in and out of the classroom and and also as a personal trainer.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Health Education,
and I just love helping people.
So, let's get started on what I discovered.
Cyanocobalamin. This is a form of vitamin B12 used to treat and prevent vitamin
(01:08):
B12 deficiency, except in the presence of cyanide toxicity.
Now, that is Wikipedia's definition.
Now, Now, this deficiency in this key vitamin, it can actually cause fatigue,
nerve damage, digestive issues, depression, and even memory loss.
So it's really important.
You actually need it for healthy nerve cells.
(01:29):
You need it to support proper brain function. It assists in the production of
DNA and RNA, and it works with other B vitamins like B9 to help you make red blood cells.
So vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that your body craves,
And that's why a lot of people turn to supplements for help.
Now, you can find it naturally in animal products like beef and eggs, dairy and fish.
(01:53):
But also, there's this synthetic form, the cyanoocobalamin. And you know what?
Our world seems to like man-made stuff.
So let's break down this big word. We have cyano, and that actually means cyanide.
And then you have cobalamin, and that is cobalt.
So first, cyanide.
(02:14):
Now this is a naturally occurring chemical, so it's found in a lot of plants.
But also, it's highly lethal. So it's actually been used in conventional warfare
and poisoning in like World War I and World War II, I think in the Iraq War, because it is so lethal.
And what it does is it shuts down the energy to the mitochondria in the cell.
(02:37):
So the mitochondria, this is the powerhouse of the cell and it generates energy
to power your cells. But oxygen is needed.
And what the cyanide does, it cuts off this oxygen to the cell.
And then cobalt, it's an element, so it's a metal. It's silvery blue in color
and you can find it in magnets, high-tech turbines, and even in some cancer treatments.
(03:01):
Okay, so now we know what both of the components of this cyanocobalamin is.
How can it possibly be vitamin B12 if it has a metal in it and it has cyanide in it?
Well, let's talk a little bit more about it. Now, the cyanocobalamin,
that's the synthetic form.
Now, the natural form is called methylcobalamin.
(03:22):
And some experts say that somehow your body can convert this synthetic form
to a natural form because they're both really close in chemical structure,
but they're a little bit different.
So is this synthetic kind healthy? So let's talk first about how it's made.
Okay, and here's my question. Is it true that synthetic vitamin B12 comes from
(03:46):
sewage treatment plants? Okay, is this a myth?
Because there was a video that went viral saying that it actually comes from
human waste sludge, okay, that it's actually dried, and then it's put into your
energy drinks like Celsius,
okay, but there are different opinions, so I want to go through first what the
(04:06):
video talked about, and then some different opinions, and then we'll go from there.
Now, this video was put out by a man named Gary Brekka.
He says that cyanocobalamin is harmful to humans, okay, he says it's in your
Your energy drinks like Celsius and Monster.
But he said it's not in the energy drink Bang.
Okay, now Bang actually has a methylcobalamin in it. So that's the healthy kind.
(04:31):
So on this video, he says, now don't drink Celsius or Monster, but you can drink Bang.
Okay, and that was a concern for me because I haven't found one energy drink that's healthy for you.
They all have in them, including sugar-free Monster, they have sucralose in them.
So if they're sugar-free, which is horrible for you and then it's even worse if it has sugar in it.
(04:54):
But let's go on to more about what the video said.
Okay, in this video he said it has four times more than the daily allowance of cyanide in it.
And he says it comes from sludge that is scraped off of sewage in treatment facilities.
And it's a foamy yellow sludge. And he says what they do is it's dried,
it's sent to another facility and then it's synthesized with a metal and hydrogen cyanide.
(05:20):
So I want you to remember that word, hydrogen cyanide.
And what Mr. Brekka says is they're putting this in your vitamins and in your
energy drinks, and there's absolutely no regulation for purity.
Okay, so let's recap just for a minute what his video said.
He says to drink Bang, an energy drink that has sucralose in it or lots of sugar.
(05:42):
He says there's four times more than the daily allowance of cyanide.
He said it comes from human waste sludge, which is not regulated,
and they make it with hydrogen cyanide that's mixed with a metal.
So I decided that I should fact check Mr. Brekka's video.
So I went to Snopes.com and what it said was that both the Celsius and the Monster
(06:04):
energy drinks do not have unhealthy amounts of cyanide in them.
And in the same video by Mr. Brekka, Snopes.com said he incorrectly says that
hydrogen cyanide is used because it's not.
They said there's a small amount of cyanide but
no more than what you would get from everyday food such as
flax seeds or apricots and I want to add here that apricot seeds and other seeds
(06:29):
actually have cyanide in them so it's in the seeds but not in the fleshy part
of the fruit so the chances of you eating a whole seed is pretty small okay
and they got their information from
the Office for Science and Society of McGill University.
And their article was titled, Oh My, There is Cyanide in B12 Supplements Really.
(06:52):
Which reminds me, if you want to find that article, or if you want any of my
sources that I use for my podcast, just feel free to email me,
and my email will be in the show notes.
Okay, now here's another opinion, and this was in an article by the Wellness
Watchdog, and it was titled, Why Does B12 Have Sewage Sludge in It?
Uncovering the unsettling truth about your supplements.
(07:15):
They say, yes, in fact, synthetic vitamin B12 comes from sewage.
They say it's not quite as bad as what Mr. Brekka was saying.
Okay, now, and they kind of explained it better. They said the byproduct of
wastewater treatment is full of microorganisms like bacteria,
and this bacteria is what breaks the sludge down and produces vitamin B12.
(07:40):
Well. How can that be beneficial?
They say it can be used as organic fertilizer because it actually contains nitrogen and phosphorus.
And I know a lot of farmers who use animal waste for fertilizer,
so it's really good that way.
And then the article also said that the application of sewage sludge is heavily regulated.
(08:02):
Okay, and how it works is there are certain bacteria that are required to make
this B12 naturally from sludge.
They said there's controlled fermentation processes that harness these bacteria on a larger scale.
So manufacturers are not just scooping up sludge and putting it in your vitamins.
They're using the microorganisms that actually live in that environment.
(08:23):
Environment the b12 that is produced is highly
purified before put into any energy drink or
any vitamins they did add a side note
and said there are risks of cross contaminations you know even though there
are strict purity standards and some of the contaminants could be like heavy
metals or pathogens and this could lead to some health issues which are mostly
(08:45):
digestive now the reason they use synthetic vitamin B12 is because it's more stable,
and that's why they use it in a lot of different supplements.
And here's another opinion by Dr. Joel Mason, and he is leader of the vitamins
and carcinogenesis team at the Gene Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center
on Aging, and that's at Tuft University.
(09:07):
He refuted Gary Brekka's video, and he says that cyanocobalamin is not harmful to humans.
He says that this synthetic form is not made from hydrogen cyanide.
Okay, because remember earlier that Gary Brekka said it was made from hydrogen cyanide.
He says it's actually made from potassium cyanide and cobalt.
(09:30):
And he said cobalt is found naturally in natural vitamin B12.
But he did say there are tiny amounts of cyanide.
But he felt like the levels are far, far below what could cause harm.
And I'm going to recap all this at the end, but stick with me.
There was another opinion from Healthline.com.
They say the body can convert the synthetic form of B12 into natural.
(09:55):
So when cyanocobalamin enters the body, it's either converted to methylcobalamin or adenosylcobalamin.
And they say that synthetic is absorbed better, but natural is retained in the body longer.
And then, of course, the FDA, their take on it is that they approve the use
of this synthetic vitamin B12.
(10:16):
They actually approved a nasal spray that has it in it in 2005.
That was about 19 years ago.
Now, I couldn't find a lot of research on what the FDA has said, but they do approve it.
Okay, are there any side effects if you do consume synthetic vitamin B12?
According to Dr. Eric Berg, he also says that normal amounts aren't enough to
(10:39):
cause any problems, but overconsumption is the problem.
And I know a lot of people have a problem with drinking five or six or seven energy drinks a day.
And he said this can cause vomiting, stomach problems, low potassium,
headache, fever, dizziness, inflammation in the stomach and intestines,
and even low stomach acid.
(11:01):
And then he added that if you have the gene mutation, the MTHFR,
that your body might not be able to detox the cyanide out of your body.
So he felt like natural B12 was better.
And then if any of you are taking like the B12 shots, I looked that up and they
contain the synthetic form, not the natural form.
(11:23):
Okay, so where would you find the natural vitamin B12, the methylcobalamin?
Well, it's made naturally by bacteria that's in the gut of animals.
And then it comes through in the foods that come from the animals.
So like beef, dairy, fish, salmon, trout, eggs, or chicken.
Okay, so you can get it naturally from animal products. Can you get it from supplements?
(11:47):
And you can actually buy it. I found some capsules that was called Pure Encapsulations,
and they have straight methylcobalamin vitamin B12 capsule that you can buy.
And then you can find it in other products if you look on the label,
because it is actually in the Bang Energy Drink.
Now before I give you my take on it, I just want to give you a few of the benefits of vitamin B12.
(12:12):
Okay, and one is very well known, and that is increased energy.
You're going to have better sleep. You're going to wake up more refreshed.
You can actually have better vision. It can help increase melatonin.
It actually decreases homeocysteine, which is not a a good thing to have in
your body, and it can help regulate cortisol.
(12:33):
Okay, so I hope that I've given you both sides of the issue.
And as always, you know, do your own research, but I want to give you my take. So first, let's recap.
Okay, all of the opinions that I gave you, they all agreed that it has cyanide
in it, and some say it has more than others.
Some said it was made with hydrogen cyanide. Some say it wasn't.
(12:55):
They say it was made with potassium cyanide.
One thing that they all agreed on was that it does come from human waste sludge.
Now, some of the opinions said it was unregulated. Others say it's highly regulated.
Okay, so what would I do? I'll give you my opinion. I personally would get it
naturally so the methylcobalamin is the healthier choice,
(13:18):
so if you can eat your beef and dairy and chicken and fish and other animal
products now if you're vegetarian you probably want to use a supplement but
I would find one that has the methylcobalamin in it so anything synthetic is
not healthy so I agree with Dr.
Berg on that and I also agree that cyanide is toxic so if it's man-made it's
(13:40):
not going to be good and also it's going to tax your liver because it's going
to have to try and filter all of that out.
So what are some other things that you can do besides what I just mentioned?
First of all, read your labels and find out what's in the products that you're eating and drinking.
Check your vitamin mineral supplements for the form of vitamin B12 it contains.
(14:01):
And if you're looking for a super healthy vitamin mineral supplement that does
not contain anything synthetic,
it only comes from whole foods, then check
out a product I absolutely love it's called Vitality and
you can find that on my website jeannieolson.3international.com now some other
things you can do is be mindful of your source I know that's not easy to do
(14:24):
wouldn't it be nice if they on the ingredients labels they had to print the
source of each ingredient on the label but unfortunately they don't.
But you can look for third-party tested certifications that guarantee the purity of your supplements.
Now, all of the three products from 3 International do.
And you can also look for these words on the label. So, look for methylcobalamin.
(14:49):
And if you want to remember that word, just think, ethyl only uses methyl.
I know that is so bad. I don't know why I said that.
Okay, also look for USDA organic, non-GMO verified.
Both of these indicate that there's higher purity standards.
Make sure that what you're taking is free of synthetic fillers and artificial
(15:10):
preservatives and look for companies that are transparent about their sources.
And you can also use a detox supplement to help.
Just above anything else, just be diligent and do your homework and know what
you're putting in your body.
Okay, I hope you found this episode informative and helpful.
So please share it it with someone who you think would benefit from it,
(15:32):
and remember this, never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.
That was written by Corrie Ten Boom, and she was actually a Holocaust survivor.
You see, just like her, you may not be able to see a way out or a way through
a difficult situation, but know this, God already has the way completely figured out.
(15:54):
All you have to do is trust and follow. See you next time.
