Nihilists argue nothing really matters; there is no right and wrong, no meaning, no love. It is all a grand and pointless illusion, they say. But there are three problems with this. One, they don’t act like they believe it – for they get unhappy if you cause them pain. Two, the costs of nihilism greatly outweigh the benefits to oneself and the world. Three, nihilism is an assumption lacking enough evidence for its claims; it makes no better sense of the data of experience than belief systems professing meaning, love, purpose, goodness and beauty, and in fact a closer look at what we know indicates far more reason to believe Good exists.
