il testo, qualsiasi testo, dice Dante, è un oggetto denso, interpretabile a quattro livelli diversi: c’è un senso letterale, uno allegorico, uno spirituale, uno anagogico (o figurale). Di ciascun livello interpretativo il poeta dà una definizione e un esempio. Aggiunge poi che il senso letterale racchiude tutti gli altri eventuali, dunque non si può giungere ad essi, se non si è intesa la lettera del testo.
