Sharing about our families, elders and ancestors has an important role in shaping the identity of our children. Or families, elders and ancestors can provide encouraging life lessons and traditions that provide our children with positive feelings and confidence. A positive self-identity supports the healthy development of our children’s emotional and social well-being...all of which are SC early learning standards and support children’s readiness for kindergarten.

While you are reading: As you come to parts of the story that are similar to experiences in your family, pause to share those experiences.
After reading: Review what an ancestor is and what an elder is to support vocabulary development.
