El ataque de las fuerzas del CEFA contra Francisco Alberto Caamaño y parte de su equipo en Santiago, en el Hotel Matum el 19 de diciembre de 1965, fue realizado con la intención de asesinarle, por el odio que en su contra habían asimilado los militares trujillistas y antidemocráticos, porque Caamaño encabezó un movimiento que puso en peligro sus históricos privilegios, declaró el señor Bill Wall, financista que estuvo hospedado en el hotel Matum durante el ataque.
