In past decades, families have often declined to write in an obituary how their relative died when there was stigma attached to the cause of death--AIDS, opioid overdose, or suicide, for example. But as the public becomes more aware of mental illness, drug addiction, and infectious disease, obituaries now give way to candor.

Such is the case for deaths resulting from coronavirus. Families and friends write in the terrifying final days of their loved ones, while urging people to take social distancing and mask-wearing seriously.
