The dual meet is one of the great features our sport has to welcome new fans, to pack arenas and to see how one team matches up with another. While dual meet scoring has undergone some changes over the past 50-plus years, does the team scoring metric adequately represent the scoring that takes place within the men’s college structure of 10 weight classes? Glenn Gormley, Kevin Hazard and Jason Bryant dive into the topic with Gormley’s Margin of Victory method. Some suggested practices have a point scored is a point earned factoring into the team score. Wrestling journalists Andy Hamilton and Kyle Klingman did a deep dive on this several years ago on that method and Hall of Famer Wade Schalles has offered versions of it for well over two decades. Well, what did the MatStats crew uncover? The study includes two 5-year periods (1988-1992 & 2017-2022). We also look at three memorable college duals in history and see how the scoring could have impacted those meets.

MatStats analyzes yearly changes, weight class differences, and scoring changes as the rounds progress through the tournament. A great way to learn about changes in the sport in the last 30 years.
