La storia dell'emigrazione italiana fu ricca di tragedie individuali e collettive, sfruttamento, schiavismo, incidenti sul lavoro che provocarono stragi. Una delle più tragiche avvenne il 6 dicembre 1907, nella miniera di carbone di Monongah, West Virginia dove morirono 362 minatori di cui 171 le vittime "ufficiali" italiane.
