In the summer of 1977, the People's Temple leader Jim Jones fled to Guyana with his almost 1,000 followers to escape "intense media scrutiny." They formed a settlement called Peoples Temple Agricultural Project commonly known as Jonestown. In part one we go through a little bit of the background of the Peoples Temple and what led up to them going to Guyana and life in the early days of the settlement. We end with the formation of the "Concerned Relatives" which was a group of former members or family members of those currently in Guyana which led to Senator Leo Ryan paying Jonestown a visit setting up the sequence of events that would follow which we will cover in part 2!
