Hear about the reality of virtual teaching from a teacher’s perspective as three state teachers of the year Cara Lougheed (MI), Takeru Nagayoshi (MA), and Rebecca Vitelli (DE) stop by to discuss the challenges, the importance of family engagement, and why education cannot be viewed solely through an academic lens.

Guest Bio:

Cara Lougheed (LAW-heed) has taught English Language Arts and history for 21 years in Rochester Community Schools and is the 2019-2020 Michigan teacher of the year. She has taught multiple levels of English, from remediation to Advanced Placement courses, as well as United States and World History. Over the years, Cara has been a Social Studies teacher leader, a building Activities Director, union building representative, and a national delegate representing Rochester at the NEA Representative Assembly each summer. She believes a teacher never stops learning, and that every educator must seek ways to grow and embrace equity in the classroom and beyond.

Takeru Nagayoshi is the 2020 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year and teaches AP English in New Bedford, MA. An education equity advocate, Takeru leverages his teaching experiences to publish op-eds, coach teachers, and lend his voice to multiple panels, committees, and advisory groups. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with an honors B.A. in international relations and from Boston University with a M.Ed in Curriculum and Teaching.

Rebecca Vitelli is a preschool special education teacher at the Colonial Early Education Program (CEEP) in New Castle, Delaware and is the 2020 Delaware Teacher of the Year. She works with typically developing peers and students with autism and moderate to severe health and cognitive needs to provide an exceptional individualized early learning experience. Her firm belief that every child has an innate drive and extraordinary ability to learn guides her inclusive practice.
