Iguanas were the latest craze in pets to go wrong. Pet shops across the UK were selling the cute hand-sized reptiles when young and friend, but failed to explain that soon the creature would be 5 feet long and not so cuddly. The Brent Spar was a massive oil rig used as a storage tank for oil from the North Sea. It was over 200 miles from Scotland and in the middle of the turbulent waters. At the end of its life, Shell and the British Government wanted to sink it in the North Atlantic. Greenpeace had other ideas and seized the empty structure on 30 April 1995. I was sent by BBC Radio 5 Live to see what was happening.

In 1995, I visited Antarctica to produce and present a 30-minute documentary for BBC Radio 4. It was about two very different journeys to the Ice for tourists and scientists. It was a life-changing trip for all. I met 400 rich and glamorous tourists enjoying champagne and cabaret, and scientists from the British Antarctic Survey undertaking groundbreaking research.
